If you live in Lakelands, you already know the walk. Out the front door, down toward Main Street, past the pavilion, and back up through the park. Most Saturdays it is a coffee-and-dog-leash routine. For four specific weekends between Labor Day and Columbus Day, that same walk lands you in the middle of something bigger.
The idea worth holding onto is this: Main Street is not four separate community events in a row. It is one civic corridor rotating through four different uses in five weeks. Residents who show up for one and skip the others are missing the rhythm the neighborhood was designed to produce.
Look at where the calendar clusters. The farmers market meets at the Main Street Park and Pavilion at 301 Main Street. The Monday-night group run meets at the Lakelands Park Pavilion at 1368 Main Street. The 5K finishes on Main Street. Oktoberfest spills down Main Street. Every one of these events is anchored to the same half-mile of pavement.
That is not accidental. Lakelands and its sister community were designed in a charrette process led by the DPZ team, and the Main Street corridor was drawn as the shared civic room for both neighborhoods. The fall calendar is the corridor working the way the planners intended. If you have been treating these events as unrelated one-offs on Nextdoor, this is the reframing.
The date to circle first is the Saturday after Labor Day. The Kentlands/Lakelands 5K Run, Walk, and Kids Fun Run is set for Saturday, September 5, 2026, from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. This is the 33rd running, and it is worth understanding what a 33-year-old neighborhood race looks like at scale before you decide whether to sign up or just cheer.
The event draws over 1,500 runners and walkers, 300+ children in the Kids Run and Tot Trot, and more than 2,000 spectators and community members who join the post-race festival, which features live music, food vendors, giveaways, and family-friendly fun. For a community of Lakelands's footprint, those numbers mean the streets around your house will look different for a morning.
The course itself is the tell. This USATF certified 5K course winds and rolls through the new urbanist communities of Kentlands and Lakelands, giving participants the chance to experience the unique design of these award-winning neighborhoods, with modest hills that make the course somewhat challenging but not difficult for novice runners and walkers. Translation: if you can walk your dog past the pavilion without stopping, you can finish this race.
A few logistics worth knowing before race week:
If you are not running, the useful move is to walk up to Main Street around 9:00 a.m. with coffee. The finish line is right there, the local bands are already playing, and you will run into more neighbors in an hour than most people meet in a year of driving to Rio.
The morning after the race, and every Saturday morning that follows, the same Main Street Pavilion switches uses. Main Street Market is a long-standing tradition in the Kentlands neighborhood, located around the Main Street Pavilion at 301 Main Street, open year round from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with fresh locally grown fruits, vegetables and microgreens, mushrooms, plants and flowers.
Two things separate this market from the generic version other suburbs run. The first is the range. Take home savory prepared dinners, homemade breads and artisan sweet treats, find your favorite drink with spirits, fresh ground coffee and onsite created juices, take home some treats for your furry friends and shop the locally crafted Artists and Crafters tables, and enjoy live music by local musicians and songwriters on select Saturdays. The second is the accessibility of the benefits program. Customers with Federal Nutrition Benefits (including SNAP, P-EBT, eWIC, and Senior FMNP checks) can match their benefits up to a certain limit each week, excluding purchases from Spirits and Food Trucks.
A resident-only observation worth making: the market is the same location as the 5K packet pickup and the same location as the Monday group run pavilion for the other neighborhood pavilion at 1368 Main Street. That is why the calendar feels so tightly stacked. It is not four venues. It is essentially two pavilions doing shift work.
Here is the piece even long-time residents tend to miss. The Kentlands/Lakelands group run meets at 7:00 PM every Monday at the Lakelands Park Pavilion, 1368 Main Street, Gaithersburg, and is a revival of the Monday night Lakelands/Kentlands group run. It is a new run to the MCRRC weekly offering and the only Monday drop-in group run. Distance options are 3 or 5 miles, contacts are Paul Hasson and Lisa Levin, and it is free.
The reason to mention this in a post about fall weekends is not the run itself. It is what the run implies about the pavilion. Lakelands Park is not just a soccer field with a playground attached.
Located in the Lakelands community, this park features lighted fields for baseball, softball, soccer and other team sports, a picnic pavilion, and Billy's Playground, a fully handicapped-accessible play area for young children. The City maintains two skate spots for street skating at Diamond Farm Park and Lakelands Park.
And a small detail that most residents have walked past without knowing: the eco-friendly synthetic turf field at Lakelands Park stands out for its use of an organic infill made from rice husks, coconut fiber, and cork, natural materials that address concerns associated with artificial fields that use black rubber infill. If you have been on that field with a kid this summer and wondered why it feels different underfoot, that is why.
Five weeks after the 5K, the corridor reorganizes one more time. The City of Gaithersburg presents the 33rd annual celebration of Oktoberfest on Sunday, October 11, 2026, from noon to 5 p.m. The festival takes place in and around the Arts Barn, Kentlands Mansion, Kentlands Village Green and along Main Street and Inspiration Lane.
Same pavement as the 5K finish. Same Saturday-market crowd, on a Sunday, at scale. If you have hosted family in from out of town in early October in past years and driven them to a pumpkin patch forty minutes away, the more honest move is to walk them two blocks.
Put the dates side by side and the point of the post becomes obvious.
| Date | What's on | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Sat, Sept 5 | Kentlands/Lakelands 5K, 8:00–11:30 a.m. | Course through both neighborhoods, finish on Main Street |
| Sat, Sept 12, 19, 26, Oct 3 | Main Street Market, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. | Pavilion, 301 Main Street |
| Every Monday | MCRRC group run, 7 p.m. | Lakelands Park Pavilion, 1368 Main Street |
| Sun, Oct 11 | Gaithersburg Oktoberfest, noon–5 p.m. | Arts Barn, Kentlands Mansion, Village Green, Main Street, Inspiration Lane |
Four weekends. One corridor. Two pavilions doing most of the work.
The reason this matters, past the fun of showing up, is what it says about the value of living where you already live. Owners in Lakelands and Kentlands pay a premium for walkability that most of the Silver Spring–Frederick–Rockville corridor cannot offer. Fall is when that premium cashes out. The house is close to the pavilion, the pavilion is close to the race finish, and the race finish is close to Oktoberfest.
If you have friends still shopping in North Potomac or other Montgomery County pockets and asking what it is actually like to live inside the Main Street loop, invite them to the Sept. 5 finish line. It is a better answer than any listing description could offer.
When you are ready to talk about what your own home on this corridor is worth going into the fall market, or you have questions about how the Lakelands lifestyle translates on paper for a buyer or a seller, Valerie D Harnois is a Kentlands resident who works this stretch of Main Street every week.
